If you’re just starting out on Twitter or feel like you’re on a hamster wheel i.e. using up energy but going nowhere then these tips might just help you.
I consider this as a companion piece to my previous post where I covered how to create valuable content that resonates.
Post Post Post
The amount of tips and conflicting advice given about the ideal number of posts is dizzying.
If you’re a business or type of organisation that needs to stay in people’s minds then I recommend posting once every hour or two hours. This is where having a scheduling platform comes in handy.
If it’s a personal account, I’ve found that a good rule of thumb is posting approximately five times per day. You can post more or less depending on your preference but be sure to space them out so it doesn’t look like a spammy posting style.
Quote Retweet
When you Quote Retweet, you add text and sometimes images as well that appear above the original tweet that you’re sharing on your timeline.
Avoid generic or bland comments as much as possible and aim for writing something thoughtful, informed, funny etc. It’ll be tricky at first but once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll find that it becomes second nature.
Aim for five of these each day; if you’re just starting out then practice this for at least month.
Retweet
While there’s no set recommended number, I’d advise reposting 5 – 10 times per day because you’ll just be sharing content that resonated with you.
Comments Galore
Set a notification for accounts you’re following which have large followings, that inspire you, and are authorities within your niche.
Comment at least once under each account but avoid generic statements like ‘thanks for sharing this’. Instead, share how the post resonated with you and why or share your opinion (avoid personal attacks).
Aim for five well-written comments each day.
Hashtags
There are two very divided camps on Twitter about hashtags. I believe that using between one to two hashtags are fine because you’ll show that you’re interacting with a specific community or topic.
Text only or include imagery?
Twitter is a writing platform first so you’ll find more text based tweets compared to those that include images, GIFs or videos unless you’re following news accounts or those of artists or something similar.
There you have it.
It’s quite a lot of work but that’s what it takes to grow on Twitter compared to other platforms so you need to put in the effort.
Avoid overwhelm by easing into this weekly routine for a month:
- Focus on one step each day, rotating among them
- Work up to two steps each day, rotating among them
- Work up to three steps then four each day
You should have a good routine by the end of the month. You’ll also get a sense of what’s working and what’s not so you can then tailor your content, posting, and interaction style.
