Instagram kicks off its Affiliate Programme

No, this is not clickbait.

Instagram just announced its new affiliate programme to provide revenue options for creators on the platform.

Instagram will start testing a native affiliate tool in June that allows select creators to recommend products available by tagging products from the brands they work with or use and get rewarded through the commissions for sales that their posts drive within the app.

Affiliate vs Shopping from Creators

Instagram has made it clear that there is a difference between the Affiliate and Shopping from Creators feature. 

With Affiliate, Creators will be able to earn a commission on any sales they generate from affiliate product tags in their in-feed post or story.

Shopping from Creators through a standard product tag is not monetized and the creator will not earn a commission on any actions taken by users.

How to earn with the Affiliate Programme

When creators make posts under the Affiliate Programme, the text “eligible for commission” will appear beneath their username, similar to how sponsored content labels appear, to show their audience that they can trust their favorite accounts for new product recommendations as well as provide support to the creator. 

Some important things to note when you’re considering affiliation on Instagram:

  • Creators receive commission payments based on the total sales they drive for a brand, enabling them to analyze the brand’s commission rate within the app.
  • Creators will be paid on closed commissions, after the return period for the items purchased has passed. For most brands, it’s between 30-90 days.
  • Creators will be able to track their performance through the Insights tab.

The Affiliate Programme may not be accessible to some creators yet, but here’s how you can get started once it rolls out in your location, according to Instagram:

Step 1: Head to “Pro Home” and select, “Set Up Affiliate.”

Step 2: Navigate to the shop of your choice, select the products you plan to promote, and save them to your wishlist.

Step 3: When creating your Feed or Story post, you can tag the products you’ve saved.

Step 4: Your final post will include a disclosure, with “Eligible for commission” appearing at the top.

In a Facebook post this year, Zuckerberg said, “Our goal is to be the best platform for creators like you to make a living. And if you have an idea that you want to share with the world, you should be able to create it and get it out there easily and simply — across Facebook and Instagram — and then earn money for your work.”

So far, it seems like there are more ways for creators on social media to earn through their content. With YouTube and TikTok providing funds for creators, we can’t help but wonder whether this is another race for Zuckerberg to get the attention of users.

However it goes, earning through content sounds like good news for creators!
